About Us

Our HISTORY

The roots of Sam and Son go back to when Sam was twenty years old. Sam had decided that he was going to build and grow a business that he would be proud of; that would sustain him, his family, and friends that worked hand in hand with him. Sam got his first start in owning and operating a business with a tow truck and gas station in Bergen NY.

Unfortunately, Sam’s first business did not end up working out, however, that did not stop him from trying again. In 1991 he opened another company specializing in sandblasting and welding and called it Sam and Son Sandblasting

His first big break came in 1994 while working for O’Connell Electric sandblasting light poles at  Clinton County Correctional Facility. This led to Sam securing his first piece of equipment, a new John Deere 310 backhoe. The company began excavating for underground conduits throughout prisons and college campuses across New York. Naturally working for electrical contractors led to working on small electrical upgrade projects in smaller substations throughout the state.

Sam and Son’s next big break came in 2006 when they secured a large portion of the original RARP – Rochester Area Rehabilitation Project. Sam and Son was awarded 9 out of 11 substations that required foundation work, site grading, and underground conduit/grounding upgrades.

After the completion of the RARP project Sam and Son decided to continue pursuing work in the energy infrastructure sector. Over the course of the next 5 years Sam and Son continued to work in substations while specializing and training their work force in the rigors and hazards of working in energized substations. This dedication and hard work resulted in growing their name as a qualified contractor for station work.

In 2013 Sam and Son took their next big step in continuing to be a one stop shop for civil work for substations. Sam and Son noticed that foundation design had begun shifting from spread footers to drilled shafts and decided to purchase their first foundation drill, a John Deere 200 excavator mounted low-drill from Hammer and Steel.

Sam and Son got their first big drilling job in 2015 building a new 115-345 kv green field station for National Grid known as “Five Mile”. The project consisted of over 300 drilled piers of varying sizes and depths.

Sam and Son continued growing their fleet and drilling expertise and in 2018 secured their first large Transmission Line for NYSEG. The project consisted of rebuilding a double circuit 46 kv line with underbuild. The project spanned across 60 total line miles.

Since then Sam and Son has continued to grow and added to their resume multiple high profile projects that have each had their own challenges to overcome. Sam and Son continues pushing to be a leading civil contractor for electrical infrastructure upgrades across the northeast.
